The Northern Governors’ Forum says it opposed the EndSARS protesters because the sars unit has been very helpful in the fight against insecurity in the northern Nigeria.
The chairman of the forum, Governor Simon Lalong, Plateau State, said in a statement that not all SARS officers are guilty of charges against them as the unit also has some good personnel.
Nigerian youth in many parts of Nigeria have been protesting against the use of harassment, excessive force, extortion and extra-judicial killings by the SARS unit.
However, protesters have refused to back down, demanding wholesale police reform.
The protesters have issued a five-point demand which includes the release of all protesters arrested and justice for victims of police brutality, an independent body to supervise the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police misconduct and psychological evaluation of all disbanded SARS officers before redeployment, they also include the increase of police salaries and improvement to enhance the discharge of their duties.
However, Mr Lalong has met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja on Thursday afternoon to talk about the dissolution of SARS.
According to Mr Lalong, “SARS is not made up of bad eggs alone as it also includes personnel who are doing their work diligently to fight against insecurity in the north”.
He said the northern governors agreed that President Muhammadu Buhari should look at the issues of reforming police in holistic ways before coming up with solution.
